Sweden’s financial watchdog to force households to reduce mortgage debt

Sweden’s financial regulator said it probably has enough political backing to proceed with a plan that would force households to reduce their mortgage debt, Bloomberg reports.

  1. How does the government force people to reduce their mortgage debt?

People have a mortgage which they are paying down monthly. They can reduce their debt faster by paying more, but what about their other needs? How does the government of Sweden intrude into all of those private contracts? Just tear them up? What is the status of a contract in Sweden after they do that?

The government of Sweden should think this through.
