The son and daughter-in-law of Michelle Bachelet resigned from her political party last night, as a scandal concerning allegations the couple received special treatment on a loan continued to exert pressure on the Chilean president.
A prosecutor is investigating whether Sebastián Dávalos and his wife got privileged access to a US $10-million loan to buy land they later sold for about US$15 million. The loan was approved a day after Bachelet was elected president in December, 2013. Dávalos already had resigned his post as director of social and cultural activities for the presidency and as the head of a charitable foundation.
